MT4 Proxy Setup on Linux (Wine).
One proxy dialog. Four values. Your orders stop touching commodity ISP routes.

How to configure MT4 on Linux (Wine)
Before you start
You need three things:
- MT4 installed and able to reach your broker without the proxy — confirm a clean baseline connection first.
- Your TradersProxy credentials from the portal: host, port, username, password.
- Five minutes and no active trades open.
Step 1 — Verify MT4 is running under Wine
MT4 for Linux runs via Wine — MetaQuotes' native MT4 Linux support uses Wine internally. Confirm your Wine version is 7.0 or higher for best networking compatibility: run 'wine --version' in the terminal.
Step 2 — Copy your TradersProxy credentials
Log in to the TradersProxy portal. Copy your host, port, username, and password from the connection details panel.
Step 3 — Open the proxy settings in MT4
Inside the running MT4 terminal under Wine, navigate to Tools → Options → Server tab → Enable proxy server → Proxy… button. The proxy dialog opens.
Step 4 — Select SOCKS5 and enter credentials
Enable the proxy checkbox. Select SOCKS5 from the protocol dropdown. Paste the host, enter the port, and fill in username and password. If SOCKS5 shows as unavailable, select HTTP — both use the same credentials.
Step 5 — Fully restart MT4 under Wine to apply
Proxy settings in MT4 do not apply to the running process — a full restart is required. Close all MT4 Wine windows completely. Relaunch MT4. The proxy route activates on relaunch.
Known gotchas on Linux (Wine)
Issues traders hit most often when setting up MT4 on Linux (Wine).
Wine's networking stack uses the Linux system resolver — DNS leaks possible. MT4 running under Wine resolves DNS using the Linux system resolver, not the SOCKS5 proxy. This is expected behaviour on Wine. Order traffic is proxied; DNS queries are direct.
Older Wine versions have known SOCKS5 compatibility issues. Wine versions below 7.0 have inconsistent SOCKS5 handling. Upgrade to Wine 7.0+ or use the WineHQ staging branch for better proxy support.
Firewall rules for Wine processes on Linux. If you run ufw or iptables, verify that outbound connections from the Wine MT4 process to your proxy host and port are not blocked. Use 'sudo ufw allow out to
MT4 via Wine may not persist proxy settings if the Wine prefix is reset. Proxy settings are stored in the MT4 configuration files inside the Wine prefix. If you reset or recreate the Wine prefix, reconfigure the proxy from scratch.
FAQ — MT4 on Linux (Wine)
Yes. MT4 running under Wine uses the same Windows-format proxy dialog. SOCKS5 is available in the same location as on native Windows: Tools → Options → Server → Proxy.
MetaQuotes does not publish a standalone native Linux MT4 binary. The official 'MT4 for Linux' package uses Wine internally. For a native Linux experience, use MT5 which has an official Linux build.
Yes. Wrapping MT4 with 'proxychains4 wine mt4terminal.exe' forces all Wine connections through the system SOCKS5 proxy. This is an alternative if MT4's built-in proxy fails on your Wine configuration.
