NordVPN alternative for trading.

NordVPN is a legitimate privacy tool. For browsing, it does what it says. For trading, it works against you: it adds latency, routes through servers that aren't near your broker, and can break MT4's persistent connections.

TradersProxy is built for a different problem. It routes only trading traffic, is placed near broker datacenters, and doesn't encrypt all your packets through a general-purpose server farm.

This page explains exactly why the tools differ — so you can decide which one your situation actually needs.

Quick answer

NordVPN and TradersProxy solve different problems.

NordVPN is built for privacy: it encrypts all your device traffic through a VPN server. That protects you on public Wi-Fi and bypasses geographic restrictions. It is not optimised for trading.

The tradeoff is real. NordVPN adds 15–40 ms of overhead, routes through servers in cities chosen for privacy coverage (not broker proximity), and does full-packet encryption that adds processing latency. For a scalper on EURUSD, that overhead is the difference between getting the first print and getting the third.

TradersProxy routes only your trading platform traffic through a node placed near your broker's matching engine. No full-device encryption. No general-purpose server routing. A purpose-built path from your platform to your broker.

What happens technically

What NordVPN does to your trading traffic

When you connect NordVPN and open MT4, here is what happens to every order you send:

  1. Your order leaves MT4 on your machine.
  2. Instead of going directly toward your broker, it travels to the nearest NordVPN server — which is chosen for privacy network coverage, not broker proximity.
  3. NordVPN's server decrypts the packet, re-encrypts it, and forwards it to your broker's server.
  4. The broker processes it and sends the fill confirmation back through the same NordVPN server.
  5. The fill confirmation arrives on your machine.

Every single order goes through that extra server. The NordVPN server adds:

  • Geographic detour: NordVPN has servers in many cities, but none of them are co-located in Equinix NY4, LD4, TY3, or SY4 — where your broker's matching engine actually lives. You are routing away from your broker to reach your broker.
  • Encryption overhead: Full-tunnel VPN encryption (AES-256) adds CPU processing time at both endpoints. On modern hardware this is 2–8 ms. Combined with the routing detour, total overhead is typically 15–40 ms.
  • Protocol interference: Some VPN configurations, particularly on UDP transport, can interfere with MT4's TCP keepalive mechanism. This causes MT4 to see connection timeouts and disconnect — the same symptom that many traders try to solve by getting a VPN, only to make it worse.

None of this means NordVPN is a bad product. For its actual use case — private browsing, streaming geo-restricted content, secure public Wi-Fi — it works well. The problem is using a privacy tool for an execution problem.

How it works

The priority route for your trading platform

Most retail traders think about two layers: their platform (MT4, MT5, cTrader) and their broker. Orders go from the platform to the broker. That's the mental model.

The missing piece is what sits between them: the network path from your machine to the broker's matching engine. That TCP connection carries every order, every price tick, every fill confirmation. Its quality determines your execution quality — not your broker's fill speed and not your platform's calculation speed, but the route.

A VPN changes the route, but in the wrong direction. It adds hops and latency. TradersProxy changes the route in the right direction — replacing the public internet hops from your machine to the broker's datacenter with a purpose-built relay node placed near the broker's server.

The network

Nodes near broker datacenters. Not general-purpose servers.

TradersProxy nodes sit in or adjacent to Equinix facilities: NY4 (New Jersey) · LD4 (London) · TY3 (Tokyo) · SY4 (Sydney) · SG1 (Singapore) · and more. These are the same datacenters IC Markets, Pepperstone, Exness, Axi, and XM use for their matching engines.

Decision guide

When to use each

Use NordVPN if:

  • You need to trade from a country where your broker blocks access and there is no other option.
  • You are on public Wi-Fi and security is your primary concern — and you understand the latency tradeoff.
  • Your trading style is swing trading or position trading where 30–50 ms additional latency is irrelevant to your outcomes.

Use TradersProxy if:

  • You want your orders to reach your broker faster and more reliably.
  • You are scalping, news trading, or in any execution-sensitive style.
  • Your MT4 disconnects and you want to fix the route rather than add more hops to it.
  • You want to reduce latency and jitter on your fills without changing brokers or moving to a VPS.

The honest answer: these two tools are not competing for the same job. If you are using NordVPN for trading execution quality, you have the wrong tool. If you need geographic privacy, NordVPN does that. Trading execution and privacy are different problems.

Frequently asked

NordVPN vs TradersProxy — questions

  • NordVPN is not designed for trading. It adds 15–40 ms of latency overhead from encryption and VPN server routing, routes your traffic through general-purpose servers rather than broker-proximate datacenters, and can interfere with MT4's persistent TCP connections. For trading, a dedicated trading proxy is the correct tool.

  • Technically yes, MT4 will connect through a VPN. But a VPN routes all traffic through its own server, which adds latency and may not be geographically close to your broker's matching engine. For low-latency trading, this is counterproductive. A SOCKS5 proxy configured directly in MT4 is a better approach.

  • A VPN encrypts all of your device's traffic and routes it through a general-purpose server. A trading proxy is configured specifically for your trading platform, routes only trading traffic, and is placed near your broker's datacenter for minimum latency. VPNs prioritise privacy. Trading proxies prioritise execution quality.

  • Yes. NordVPN adds encryption overhead and routes through NordVPN's own server infrastructure, which is not placed near broker datacenters. This increases your effective latency to the broker and introduces additional network hops. For scalping and news trading, this latency increase is significant.

  • Traders typically use VPNs to bypass geographic restrictions (brokers that block certain countries), to use public Wi-Fi more safely, or because a VPN was recommended without understanding the latency tradeoffs. For privacy on public networks, a VPN is reasonable. For trading execution quality, a dedicated trading proxy is the purpose-built solution.
