Sierra Chart proxy setup on Windows

The short answer

Sierra Chart has a proxy setting at Global Settings → Proxy Settings. Choose SOCKS5, the maker says it covers all of Sierra Chart’s network communication. The maker documents no login boxes, and said in 2017 that Rithmic and TransAct were not covered.

Where is the proxy setting in Sierra Chart?

Open Global Settings → Proxy Settings. The login window has a Proxy Settings button too, and the installer offers the same dialog.

Sierra Chart runs on 64-bit Windows, and its help gives one path for Windows 10 and 11. If you can’t find the setting, check your version. Staff said in 2021 that version 2222 lacked it and version 2225 restored it.

Which proxy type should you choose in Sierra Chart?

Choose SOCKS5, which Sierra Chart writes as SOCKS 5. The maker says that type covers all network communication, including HTTP. So more of what Sierra Chart sends goes through it, apart from the exceptions below.

An HTTP proxy is used only for HTTP communication, so we don’t suggest it for live data or orders. Traders Proxy supports both, but not SOCKS4.

How do you set it up?

Warning. Check your broker’s terms

If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one. Traders Proxy doesn’t change what your broker allows.

Set the proxy in Sierra Chart in five steps

  1. 01

    Get your values

In your dashboard’s Connect section, pick the server nearest you. Then open Your values for your platform, choose the Other tab and pick SOCKS5. Copy the server, port, login and password.

You can change the server in your dashboard. We make no claim about your broker’s city on Sierra Chart.

  2. 02

    Open the proxy dialog

In Sierra Chart, open Global Settings, then Proxy Settings.

  3. 03

Choose the type and type your values

Set the proxy type to SOCKS 5. Type the address and port, then a login and password if the dialog has boxes for them.

    Proxy type
    SOCKS 5
    Address
The server value from your dashboard
    Port
    The port from your dashboard
    Login
Your Traders Proxy login, if the dialog has the box
    Password
Your Traders Proxy password, if the dialog has the box

The maker lists HTTP Port and HTTPS Port boxes but not which one holds a SOCKS 5 port. It documents no login boxes, and staff couldn’t test authentication in 2017. If your dialog has none, we haven’t confirmed a way to sign in.

  4. 04

    Save and log in

Save the settings, then log in as usual.

Sierra Chart documents no restart step. If it won’t connect, remove the proxy and confirm it connects without one, so you know whether the proxy is the cause.

  5. 05

    Check the connection

Check that charts load and that the Log Messages window shows a connection to your data or trade service. Then open your dashboard, which shows your connected devices, live.

The Log Messages check is our suggestion. Sierra Chart describes no success indicator.

What does the proxy setting cover?

  • Documented. A SOCKS5 proxy covers all of Sierra Chart’s network communication, including HTTP. An HTTP proxy covers HTTP communication only.
  • Not covered in 2017. Rithmic and TransAct, said Sierra Chart staff. We haven’t rechecked, so don’t assume a Rithmic connection goes through Traders Proxy.
  • Unconfirmed. Login and password boxes. The maker documents none, and staff couldn’t test authentication in 2017.
  • Not tested. The chat program. Staff said in 2024 that chat connects on its own unusual port, which a proxy that allows only common ports can block.
  • Not stated. Whether news, updates and time checks use the setting, and whether Sierra Chart needs a restart.

On Sierra Chart, we claim nothing about orders or prices.

The setting lives inside Sierra Chart, so your other programs keep their normal connection. Inside Sierra Chart, the SOCKS5 setting covers all its network communication, not only data and orders.

We make no claim about orders or prices on Sierra Chart. If it accepts your login, what you get is Sierra Chart on the same plan as your other platforms.

Ping is the time data takes to go there and back. We don’t promise lower ping. Distance sets the minimum. No proxy can move your broker closer.

What about Mac, Linux and phones?

  • Mac and Linux, Sierra Chart is not natively supported there, and its support doesn’t answer Wine questions. We give no steps.
  • Phones, we found no Sierra Chart phone app in the maker’s pages, so there is nothing to set up on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Which proxy types does Sierra Chart support?

Two. Sierra Chart’s help says it supports HTTP and SOCKS 5 proxies. It documents no login or password boxes, so we haven’t confirmed sign-in through Traders Proxy.

Does the proxy cover Rithmic?

Not in 2017, when Sierra Chart’s staff said Rithmic and TransAct were outside the proxy. We haven’t rechecked, so don’t assume a Rithmic connection goes through Traders Proxy.

Do I need to restart Sierra Chart?

Sierra Chart documents no restart step. If it won’t connect after you save the settings, close it and open it again.

Will a proxy change my ping or prevent disconnects?

Drops can start at your data service or on your own internet, and ping is mostly distance. For Sierra Chart we claim no change.

Will my broker mind?

Check your broker’s terms. If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one. Traders Proxy doesn’t change what your broker allows.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Solves

Generic or free proxies fail MetaTrader's proxy Test button

“I keep getting the message "Proxy test failed" no matter what proxy settings I try to set.”

How our system handles it. Use SOCKS5 or HTTP, whichever your platform offers. Enter our server, login and password in MetaTrader’s own Proxy window.

  • Built-in SOCKS5 loginPrimary
  • Built-in HTTP proxy loginSupporting

Where it stops. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 support SOCKS5 and HTTP (not SOCKS4). A passing Test confirms the route reaches our server.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Solves

MetaTrader 5 will not use a proxy running on the same computer

“that proxy setting is working on MT4, so the problem is from MT5 not proxy”

How our system handles it. You don't need a tunnel app on your computer. Your platform connects to our server through its own Proxy setting.

  • Own separate connection to your brokerPrimary
  • Built-in SOCKS5 loginPrimary

Where it stops. Your platform connects through its built-in Proxy window, with no extra app to install. Some MetaTrader 5 builds have separate proxy-window bugs.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Not a proxy problem

The platform's proxy setting does not cover everything (WebRequest, MQL5.community, Market)

“It seems that WebRequest ignores proxy configuration, event if configured both on MT5 and operating system.”

Why a proxy does not change this. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Everything else stays on your normal internet.

  • Only the app you set up is routedBoundary

Where it stops. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Expert Advisor web calls, custom DLLs and Market downloads may still use your normal internet.

cTraderAvoids by design

cTrader will not log in from a cloud virtual machine (connection reset) or from one VPS network

“Hi 3 years later and i have the same problem on my azure windows 2022 servers.”

How local trading avoids it. You run your platform on your own computer, so there is no Windows server to set up or keep up.

  • Platform stays on your own computerPrimary

Where it stops. Your platform runs on your own computer, so there is no remote Windows server to configure. We do not run cBots while your computer is off.
