Session overlap calculator — when volume actually shows up

Select your timezone. See all four forex sessions and the high-volume overlap windows in your local time. Know exactly when network quality matters most.

What this shows you

Volume in forex concentrates when multiple sessions trade simultaneously. The London–NY overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC) is when spreads are typically tightest and volume highest. It is also when your network is most likely to be congested — your ISP's path to the broker's datacenter is competing with peak internet traffic from both continents.

Why volume windows matter

Volume concentration and what it means for execution

The forex market never closes on weekdays, but volume is not evenly distributed. It concentrates in windows when major financial centers are simultaneously open. Spreads are tighter, more orders are in the market, and price discovery is more efficient during these windows.

The London–NY overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC)

This is the highest-volume window in the forex market. Both the largest European center and the largest US center are active simultaneously. Major US economic data releases (NFP, CPI, FOMC) typically occur at 13:30 UTC — directly inside this window. This is when spreads are tightest and price moves are fastest. It is also when network congestion is highest.

The Tokyo–London overlap (08:00–09:00 UTC)

Only one hour long, and quieter than the London–NY overlap. It marks the end of the Asian session and the beginning of European trading. Volume picks up as London comes online. GBPJPY and EURJPY are particularly active during this transition.

The Sydney–Tokyo overlap (00:00–07:00 UTC)

Lower overall volume but important for AUD, NZD, and JPY pairs. This window has less liquidity than the London–NY overlap, which can mean wider spreads and more slippage on some instruments.

Network quality and session timing

When the route matters most

The London open (08:00 UTC) and the NY open (13:00 UTC / 13:30 for US data releases) are the two moments where network latency has the highest impact on execution quality. Both events concentrate trade flow at precisely the moment when general internet congestion also peaks — European and American morning commuter traffic hitting the same backbone infrastructure as trading orders. If your ping to the broker typically runs at 80 ms, expect it to be 100–150 ms during these windows without a dedicated trading route.

High-risk windows
  • London open — 08:00 UTC
  • US data releases — 13:30 UTC
  • NY open — 13:00 UTC
  • London close — 17:00 UTC
Lower-risk windows
  • Asian session (02:00–07:00 UTC)
  • Post-NY close (22:00–02:00 UTC)
  • Midday London lull (11:00–12:00 UTC)
  • Weekend (market closed)
Questions traders ask

FAQ

  • There are three main overlaps: Tokyo-London overlap runs from 08:00 to 09:00 UTC (1 hour). London-New York overlap runs from 13:00 to 17:00 UTC (4 hours) — this is the highest-volume window in the forex market. The Sydney-Tokyo overlap runs from 00:00 to 07:00 UTC but is generally lower volume.

  • Because it is the only time when the two largest trading centers are simultaneously active. Volume concentrates during this window, spreads are generally tighter, and most high-impact US and European economic data releases occur during these hours — creating both opportunity and execution risk.

  • During session overlaps, volume spikes simultaneously increase broker server load and internet backbone congestion. Your ISP's path to the broker's datacenter is most likely to be congested at London open and NY open. The same route that adds 50 ms during quiet hours may add 150 ms at 13:30 UTC on a Friday.

  • The session times in UTC do not change — but your local offset may shift by one hour when your country transitions to or from daylight saving time. The major sessions (Sydney, Tokyo, London, NY) are defined by their UTC times. The tool notes whether daylight saving is typically active for major regions.

  • Yes. The forex market is open 24 hours on business days. The overlap windows have higher volume and tighter spreads on average, but volume exists throughout the day. Some pairs — like USDJPY — remain active during the Asian session even without a London-NY overlap.
